Adriel House & Rest Home
– both Spark of Life Centres of Excellence since 2019

Adriel House & Adriel Rest Home are two homes adjacent to each other providing care exclusively for people with dementia. Twenty-one people live in each home enjoying long and meaningful lives.

The homes are situated in a rural farming community an hour north of Christchurch. Many come to live at Adriel after a life on the farm.

A rural lifestyle is reflected in the everyday and the focus is on giving each person the opportunity to have a life worth living like it used to be at home.

“This is the residents’ home, and the Spark of Life Philosophy is our care philosophy. It underpins everything we do and the way we go about it, right to the very details on HOW we connect and HOW we communicate with our beautiful residents. The philosophy guides us in facilitating a loving and inclusive environment where each resident is seen in their full potential and humanity. It keeps us focused on how to ignite their spirit and boost their self-esteem enabling our residents to be the best that they can be.”

Being Part of the Everyday at Adriel

Like it used to be at home…

At Adriel, all members of staff are educated in the Spark of Life Philosophy and have learnt to ensure that every resident can contribute to this living and thriving community in their own individualised and meaningful way.

This means that every resident has reason to get up in the morning each and every day, they know they are valued and have an important role to play. Their identity and self-esteem are restored, and they have reason to live.

Life Worth Living at Adriel

Self-initiated work in the garden.
This is the resident’s home – this is their garden.

The two neighbouring homes are interconnected via a gate that enables residents to utilise the extensive gardens of pleasure and produce – abundant with vegetables and fruit trees.

There is always something to be done and everyone is encouraged and free to initiate their involvement and contribution to the everyday life. This is an important determinant to the well-being of everyone living at Adriel because each person knows they are still able to make a difference.

Life at Adriel Tending to the Animals

Looking after the farm animals, feeding the lamb, collecting the eggs, patting the horses and mini donkeys are also integral parts of life at Adriel.

Life at Adriel Creating a Family Community

Fostering a genuine community of friendship around the people living at Adriel, has an important focus with family and friends always warmly welcomed and embraced – both in the everyday and at the bi-monthly special family events.
