Researched by Hilary Lee as part of a Masters degree in Science at Curtin University of Technology in W.A, the Spark of Life Club Program has showed outstanding results.
Staff members and families were interviewed on the impact the Spark of Life Club Program had on the personal and emotional wellbeing of people with dementia.
This exciting new study provides a deeper understanding of the positive effects of Spark of Life Club’s for elderly people with dementia. The findings revealed that stimulating and joyful experiences within the club’s lift the spirit and promote friendships between club members. This re-ignites a deep human essence within people and enhances their emotions, vitality and memory as well as meaning in life. People with dementia rediscover a sense of creativity and joy through finding new ways of communicating and interacting with one another.
Participants said the program recognises the need for culture change by shifting perceptions about people with dementia, which also enhances staff satisfaction. Learning and understanding the principles behind the program allows both staff and family members to develop a deeper understanding of people with dementia.
This study provides a meaningful insight into the lives of people with dementia and assists staff and family members to work together towards a common goal of promoting residents wellbeing.

The Spark of Life Club Program has also been internationally endorsed as recommended best practice both by the Wisconsin Adult Day Services Association (WADSA) and in a collaborative study between the Wisconsin Bureau of Aging and Disability Resources and the Wisconsin Office of Quality Assurance.
